RESEARCH

The focus of the research of this Graduiertenkolleg is the investigation of particle physics at the smallest accessible scale, e.g. by using particle accelerators at highest energies. These studies involve the search for solutions of the fundamental problems of the standard model, a few of which are 

The origin of Mass: Higgs mechanism and Higgs boson
Relation between Higgs boson and particle masses
The Hierarchy of fundamental scales: Weak scale at ∼ 100 GeV
GUT scale at ∼ 1016 GeV
Planck scale at ∼ 1019 GeV
The Unification of interactions at high energies: Grand Unified Theories (GUT)
Symmetry breaking in GUT
The existence of (Large) Extra Dimensions
The Supersymmetry between Bosons and Fermions:  Discovery of Supersymmetry
Mechanism of Supersymmetry breaking
Lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) as dark matter
The origin and understanding of CP violation

The investigation of these fundamental problems are a key issue of research in this Graduiertenkolleg. Any solution will be associated with the observation of new phenomena in high energy accelerator experiments. Only due to detailed theoretical knowledge of the processes one can identify the signatures of new phenoma in the complex final states of particle collisions at high energy. And even though the accelerators have a high discovery potential the processes of new phenomena will occur rarely in the experiments and are difficult to disentangle from other known processes. Thus the close cooperation between theory and experiment in this Graduiertenkolleg will enhance success of such searches for new phenomena. 

Five areas constitute the baseline of experimental (E) and theoretical (T) research in this Graduiertenkolleg: 

Strong Interaction (QCD) Symmetry Breaking and Heavy Gauge Bosons (SB) 
Flavour Physics Physics Beyond the Standard Modell (BSM)  
Detector Physics
