AE2: Inclusive jet + photon production in proton proton collisions

Photons are like messengers in the reactions between quarks and gluons. They carry information about the details of the scatter due to interaction electromagnetically only with the colour charged quarks. The production rate of photons characterizes the electric charge density of the scattering partners in proton proton collisions showing jets. So photons allow to statistically distinguish between the contributions from up and down quarks. Combined with the momenta of the jets one obtains information about the density and momentum distribution of the quarks in the proton (parton density function, PDF). Additionally, photon+jet reactions with a single jet are an indispensible tool for the energy calibration of the calorimeters since these measure the photon energy precisely while the energy of the jets is measured only partially. From energy and momentum conservation one can deduce corrections for the jet energy measurement (jet energy scale factors, JES).
